I can't place my finger on it but there was something missing that led to my scoring. I understand MacLean was trying to show a damaged character coming back to his childhood friend but he was just so mean. I didn't feel like his character and actions were so mean to Penelope. I don't know. I've read many of the "can't be too close to you and push you away" types of novels but this one rubbed me the wrong way.
